Problem
Due to the construction of large warehouses, temperature, and expansion joints must be considered in the floor design, which allows for controlled movement of large concrete surfaces.
Generally, large warehouse floors are designed with straight expansion joints, where straight metal profiles are used to protect the edges of the joint. However, this does not consider the real-life use of the warehouse - when forklifts are constantly driving in the warehouse, distributing goods, moving over the straight joint profile can cause much damage to the forklifts.
Additionally, forklifts can cause damage to the straight temperature and expansion joint. Damage occurs due to the expansion of straight construction joints, where the forklift bearings can collide when driving over them. Such joints should already be solved with a sinusoidal profile during the design phase. Straight joints built incorrectly should be reconstructed immediately.
At the Hammerjack warehouse floor site, 12 forklifts operate daily, and the deformation joint with a straight metal profile began to deteriorate quickly. The result was cracks and a broken joint, which damaged the forklift bearings. The joint was repaired twice during the warranty period but without effects.
Solution
We proposed using a Conecto sinusoidal profile to solve this project's problem, which helps prevent deformation joint failures. The profile helps evenly distribute the loads exerted on the deformation joint, thereby reducing damage to the wheels and bearings of forklifts or other loading equipment.
Although the profile may seem expensive at first glance, real-life experience shows that the cost of the sinusoidal profile pays for itself with the first improvement of a straight joint.
Result of the solution:
It has been exactly a year since the installation of the Conecto sinusoidal profile. The temperature and expansion joint of the warehouse floor is correct and has not required any maintenance. The expected lifespan of the sinusoidal profile is equal to that of the reinforced concrete floor.
We recommend designing the sinusoidal profile for the expansion joint of the warehouse floor already in the design phase. This will save time and the associated complex, costly repair work.
